On 13 June 2026, at the AXICA on Pariser Platz, the best young debating talents were honoured at the national final of the ‘Jugend debattiert’ competition in the presence of the Federal President and patron of the programme, Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
This year’s national final also marks the 25th anniversary of the competition. The aim of the programme, which is organised by the non-profit Hertie Foundation, is to promote a culture of debate in Germany, particularly amongst young people.
Every year, more than 200,000 school pupils learn how important debating is as a key skill for democratic participation – so that, despite the pace of digitalisation and social polarisation, they can continue to discuss issues fairly, objectively and respectfully for the good of society. This is essentially how Annette Schavan, the Foundation’s Chair of the Board, put it.
We are filled with great joy and gratitude that AXICA has once again been chosen as the venue where young talents have been honoured for their commitment to democratic values.
