The Berlin Convention Office (BCO) presents its new Internet platform www.berlin-green-meetings.de. Numerous Berlin providers, who already engage in ecological practices, are presented in a transparent manner on the website “Berlin Green Meetings” and the axica of course is one of them. A total of 13 sections, which range from convention agencies to venues, make it easy for users to find what they are looking for. Potential customers can see from a questionnaire completed by the companies which environmentally friendly practices they engage in. The Berlin Convention Office of Berlin Tourismus Marketing GmbH (BTM) developed the website in cooperation with Berlin Preferred Agencies. BTM CEO Burkhard Kieker, “Berlin is green – not just in the spring. Ecological awareness is growing as is the keen interest of meeting planners in environmentally friendly venues and accommodation. The Berlin Convention Office has responded to this positive development by creating a virtual platform - “Berlin Green Meetings”. The format is unique in Europe and provides information on the green side to the meeting and convention industry.” www.berlin-green-meetings.de.

DISCOVERING NEW TRAILS

was the motto for this years added value conference of Germany’s leading telecom provider Deutsche Telekom held in Berlin’s axica. The client moved away this year from its proven format and dared to try a completely new concept. The guests were able to take advantage of more room for technical discussions, productive brain stormings and of course the all important networking opportunities. The idea to host this year’s two day added value forum, with more than 500 invited guests anticipated, in the axica proved to be a good one. The location, one of Berlin’s premiere conference and congress venues renowned for its stunning and innovative architecture crafted from the hand of Frank Gehry, served as the perfect setting. But the sublime forms of the building were not the only curves being admired as the forum was ably presented by the voluptuous entertainer Barbara Schöneberger.

“This event was by far this year’s most demanding to date. We had to make use of as much additional space as possible, which meant taking over temporarily extra office space and rooms within the building – thankfully our neighbours and tenants were very co-operative. What’s more the forum required a rapid re-build from conference to gala dinner seating with all the trimmings that go with it, not to mention the special requirements of the many VIPs and celebrities attending. All in all we really had to push the boat out! However the great feedback from client and guest alike made it all worthwhile!” said Nina Ostheeren, Project Manager for the axica.

GEHRY’S MAGNUM OPUS

The German Song Writer Awards made their premiere in Berlin on the 28th May 2009. The Munich based GEMA brought the Pariser Platz to life as a throng of celebrity and VIP guests arrived to attend. The honours fell for once on composers and lyricists, who otherwise are often kept out of the limelight. Winners included Annette Humpe, Peter Fox, Judith Holofernes and Die Fantastischen Vier.

LIKE TWO PEAS IN A POD; DESIGN AND INNOVATION

axica at Pariser Platz 3 – the extraordinary event location designed by renowned architect Frank O. Gehry – and the fragrance foundation “Duftstars 2009” have much in common; both stand for innovation, trends and design. “We are delighted to be able to offer our support to the ‘Duftstars 2009 Fragrance Awards’ here at the axica and are very pleased to be hosting the casting for Presenter Kai Pflaume’s stage assistant within our unique location.” announces axica’s Managing Director, Jochen A. Lohmar. The awards ceremony proper for the fragrance foundation “Duftstars 2009” will take place on the 15th May 2009. STANDING STILL IS STEP BACKWARDS

Over the last years the axica Conference and Congress Centre has been very successful in developing its business further. This has led naturally to a parallelled increase in the work load. In recognition of this the owning partners have decided to provide further support for the senior management. Effective from the 1st March, Friedhelm Leschinger has been appointed Joint Managing Director, to represent the company alongside Jochen A Lohmar. Mr Lohmar will remain responsible for the managing of the Sales, Marketing and Communications areas as well as for Catering and Events and Services. Mr Leschinger will be mainly responsible for the areas of Accounting, Controlling, Procurement and Administration.

A GENIUS TURNS 80

The axica team is congratulating the architect of “their” venue to his 80th birthday. In the DZ BANK building, Frank O. Gehry has created unusual spaces bursting with energy and dynamism. It counters the severe, straight lines of the Pariser Platz with gracefully curving glass domes and projecting shapes. At the core of this architectural achievement is the biomorphous form of the Plenum. It is a gigantic sculpture with a brushed stainless steel skin that visitors can actually walk into. Inside it is an unusual conference room that seats up to 85 persons. Philosophy and science, sculpture and design – many disciplines come together in this building. The result is an architecture full of palpable energy and inspiration. A challenge for the senses. A masterpiece of form and colour, about which Frank O. Gehry remarked “THE BEST THING I´VE EVER DONE.”

This week the UK’s leading trade magazine for the MICE industry, Conference and Incentive Travel, with over 18,000 audited readers, has just published the 2009 results of its annual Readers poll.
